Edzard Ernst studied psychology and medicine at the LMU in Munich. In 1977, he qualified as a physician in Germany where he later also completed his MD and PhD theses.
Edzard was Professor in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) at Hannover Medical School (Germany) and Head of the PMR Department at the University of Vienna (Austria). He came to the University of Exeter in 1993 to establish the world’s first Chair in Complementary Medicine. Since 2012, he is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Exeter.
Professor Ernst is the founder/Editor-in-Chief of three medical journals (‘Focus on Alternative and Complementary Therapies’, ‘European Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’, and ‘Perfusion’). He has been a columnist for many publications (BMJ, GP, PJ, The Guardian, The Independent, The Spectator, The Skeptic, etc.). His work has been awarded 17 scientific awards (most recent: John Maddox Prize 2015 and Ockham Award 2017) and two Visiting Professorships (Canada and US). He served on the ‘Medicines Commission’ of the British ‘Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency’ (1994 – 2005). In 2022, he became a member of the Academia Europaea Academy of Europe: Ernst Edzard (ae-info.org).
According to Ioannidis et al (2020) “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators”, Prof Ernst is currently ranked:
- No 107 amongst the ~160 000 most-cited scientists of all disciplines worldwide
- No 1 in the category of ‘Complementary & Alternative Medicine’ worldwide
Prof Ernst has published >1000 scientific articles (H-Index=157, Google Scholar), > 50 books, translated into over a dozen languages (most recent: Charles, The Alternative Prince: An Unauthorised Biography (Societas): Amazon.co.uk: Ernst, Edzard: 9781788360708: Books), >100 book-chapters (most recent: Oxford Textbook of Medicine: Amazon.co.uk: Firth, John, Conlon, Christopher, Cox, Timothy: Books). In 2019, the US 'Book Authority’ included ‘Trick or Treatment’ (authored by Simon Singh and Edzard Ernst) in its list of ‘best mental health books of all time’.
Prof Ernst has given > 700 invited lectures worldwide, supervised >50 MD and Ph.D. theses, and acted as an expert witness for legal disputes in the UK, US, and Canada.
