
Vanesa Huertas Carrera (preferred name Sofia) is a GPhC registered pharmacist and Senior Research Consultant with over 20 years’ experience in healthcare and more than eight years specialising in health economics, evidence synthesis, and health technology assessment (HTA). She has contributed to 13 NICE technology appraisals, including one multiple technology appraisal, 12 Evidence Review Group (ERG) reports, and a range of early scientific advice engagements. Her expertise spans the design, conduct, and critical appraisal of evidence synthesis, having led or contributed to more than 30 systematic literature reviews and undertaken over 300 high level risk of bias appraisals of published systematic reviews. She has also served as a peer reviewer for over 80 manuscripts for Swiss Medical Weekly.
She has international experience supporting HTA and reimbursement activities for CADTH in Canada and Singapore’s ACE. Since 2020, she has collaborated with Consilium Scientific, contributing to complex methodological and evaluative projects in rare diseases and diagnostics. Prior to her research career, she held senior leadership roles in pharmacy practice, including Superintendent Pharmacist and Group Pharmacy Manager within a large multiple pharmacy organisation.
She holds a Master of Pharmacy (MSc Pharm) from Universidad Complutense de Madrid, a Master of Public Health from the University of York, and a Postgraduate Certificate in International HTA and Reimbursement from the University of Sheffield, providing a strong foundation in clinical practice, evidence generation, and decision making.
