Should you have a career?

08.10.2020 17:00

Dr Leeza Osipenko

Some exceptional individuals come into this world with clearly defined talents and become piano prodigies before they get to secondary school or tennis sensations before a question of a career choice may arise. From the rest of us, the societies expect to acquire practical skills, preferably graduate from a university (or a few), secure a profession and make a career. Media, peer pressure, neurotic parents, or TED talks ensure to instil into our heads ideas of success and bright futures. This talk is about choices and decisions, expectations and inspirations, ever changing reality and never changing human vices. It may help you think about your career paths and life in general.

Сost of Targeted Therapies in Cancer

 02.09.2021

Valerie Jentzsch and Gen Okamoto

Increasing prices of cancer therapies have been criticised since the early 2000s and the pharmaceutical industry has attributed this to increasing costs of drug development. This increase in prices is particularly significant for targeted cancer therapies. While targeted therapies have great promise, the clinical benefit they are currently providing is not meeting expectations and the financial burden of treatment is high. Throughout their placement at Consilium, Valerie and Gen calculated the cost of clinical trials in three molecular targets for cancer therapy. This talk describes the methodology used and discusses the costs determined with regards to approved drugs and their prices.

Tools for Evaluation of Non-randomised Trials

02.09.2021

Zeyu Zhao

With oncology gradually becoming an avant-garde area of focus and regulators speeding up the appraisal and reimbursement process to encourage market access, the benefits of carrying out Non-randomised studies (NRSs) instead of Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are tempting. Thus, critically appraising the validity and trustworthiness of NRSs in oncology is crucial. To date, with no clear preference regarding the quality appraisal tools in NRSs compared to RCTs, even fewer studies attempt to focus on the quality appraisal tools that are suitable for the types of studies that deal with oncology therapies. This talk, based on the research project carried out by Zeyu during her placement with Consilium Scientific, reviews the quality appraisal tools for oncology to provide a glimpse of what is available and how each tool performs.
